Software Development

When Does Custom Software Make Sense?

Custom development is not always the best choice. It becomes valuable when workflows, integrations or differentiation are part of the business.

Standard software is appropriate when a workflow is common and well-covered by an established product. Custom software becomes interesting when workarounds, duplicate data entry and disconnected systems create lasting cost.

Strong reasons for custom development

  • The process creates genuine competitive advantage.
  • Several systems require deep integration.
  • Standard products cannot model core business rules cleanly.
  • Roles, data or workflows have special requirements.
  • Manual work grows faster than the business.

Do not build everything yourself

Custom systems should still use proven services where appropriate: authentication, payment providers, email, cloud storage or established APIs. Custom development should focus on what is truly specific.

Incremental instead of big bang

A clearly scoped first product core reduces risk. Data models and architecture should allow extensions without implementing every possible future requirement upfront.
